| | | | | | | | | Target Group: Secondary age students
Sell for Success is a one-day programme for around 100 students. We recommend it for the whole year group, not merely business studies or economics students. In current jargon the aim is to increase the “enterprise capability” of 13-15 year olds through a highly participative programme designed to show them how a commercial business works. We also aim to get them thinking about their own future after full-time education. Their contact with external “Business Partners” is very important in both respects as it provides a rare first-hand contact with the commercial world.
The backbone of the workshop is a business game, which simulates companies competing to import and sell computer games consoles. The students, divided into 5 teams of 20 and working with an external adviser (“Business Partner”) from a commercial company, play the game to see which team can sell the most consoles and make the biggest profit. |

During the day the students will innovate the development of the consoles in response to the competitive pressures of the marketplace. In addition they must produce marketing material and mock up a “shop” (staffed by sales and customer services personnel) which is judged by some rather exacting customers. Finally each group makes a short presentation to the whole Workshop describing their experiences. This formula ensures that it is not only the computer literate/business studies orientated students who find benefit.
The Groups which plan and organise their activities best and discover the secrets of good teamwork will tend to produce the most satisfying results. This is of course good learning for them all.
To help them in their practical work the students receive some teaching input from the Business Partners on sales, marketing and finance. This session last approximately 35 minutes and teaching material is provided. The material is interactive rather than a lecture and we encourage Partners to incorporate examples and material from their own experience and workplace as this increases the impact for the students.
A teacher is present with each group throughout and will work actively with the Business Partner – so they are not left alone with 20 unknown 15 year olds for the day!
The time commitment is 8.30am-3.30pm, plus a two-hour briefing session for Business Partners and teachers a week or so beforehand and, at your discretion, a couple of hours of familiarisation/preparation.
Sell for Success offers your staff direct experience in leading and mentoring a group, presentation skills and problem solving. Young Enterprise provides the material, a comprehensive briefing and full support. The students invariably respond very well and produce impressive work: the Business Partners find the experience stimulating and rewarding and are frequently keen to return the following year.
