Numeracy and Literacy Trails
Target Group:  Primary age pupils

The Numeracy Trail

Pupils visit their local shopping centre and work through carefully prepared assignments based on different aspects of the numeracy curriculum.

Numeracy trails are currently available in Epsom, Frimley, Farnham, Godalming, Redhill, Staines and Woking.
The Literacy Trails

Building on the success of the above, the first Literacy Trial has been developed in Staines. This programme has been designed to support key stage 2 English Curriculum.

Both activities support the curriculum by providing tasks which use everyday life situations as the context.  They give the pupils the opportunity to practice key skills - working with others, improving own learning and performance, problem solving, communication and application of number.

Each trail takes approximately two hours and must be co-ordinated through Surrey EBP and the shopping centre management.

Case Studies
On three consecutive mornings, over 60 year six pupils enjoyed walking around Frimley town Centre.  The pupils were following a carefully prepared Numeracy Trail during which they were able to put into practice their numeracy skills in a real life context.  Along with their teachers, and assisted by some local traders, the pupils worked on assignments to help with percentages, ratios and money problems.
