We at Surrey Bridges are proud of the acheivments of all of the students who took part in the wide range of programmes available.

The mentor” At out first meeting, he was really negative saying “You’re not going be able to help me” After a couple of meetings he started to open up and together we realized what the main issues were.  Now he has a very prohibitive attitude and he is setting himself targets such as completing his course work. Both his school and his parents are really pleased with the change in attitude, which for me has been very rewarding to see.
Future Town – an activity designed to inspire students to think creatively, and to provide them with an opportunity to practice key skills.  This exercise is usually run with the whole year group so it can accommodate large numbers of students.   Working in groups the students give thought to how their town might look in terms of education, energy,& waste, finances, housing, shopping, sport recreation & leisure transport and working life.  During the course of the morning the students work on specific tasks and in the afternoon they present their findings.  Business Advisors use their knowledge ands skills, working alongside teachers to assist the student who really value “outside” input.

Chris interviewed very poorly, unable to identify with what he wanted or expected from his placement in a restaurant. This proved to be down to extreme shyness.  After 2 days at work he had settled in so well that he outshone some of the more experienced staff.
“His performance shamed some of my more experienced staff!”  -  Manager
Louise was such a help to the teaching staff of a local junior school that she was asked to stay on for a further 2 days.  She had quickly built up an outstanding rapport with both the children and staff, used her own initiative and was constantly friendly, helpful and cheerful.
“She was a great asset”  -  Senior Teacher
Scott enjoyed his work experience within a local sportswear shop and showed such enthusiasm that he has been offered a Saturday job.
Daryl spent a week at a local radio station and was very keen to learn about all aspects of the radio industry, not just presenting.  His employers enjoyed having him as part of the team so much that they invited him back during the summer holidays.
“It was great to have Daryl around” – Station Manager
Joe was severely hard of hearing and because of this, extremely lacking in self confidence.  He spent his work experience in a special needs school for deaf children where he was quickly accepted by both staff and pupils.  Joe’s successful placement has changed his life to such an extent that he now wishes to pursue a career in teaching deaf children, has gained considerable self confidence and has a much more positive attitude to his future.
The Numeracy Trail - on three consecutive mornings, over sixty year six (eleven year olds) pupils enjoyed walking around Frimley Town  Centre. The pupils were following a carefully prepared Numeracy Trail during which they were able to “ put into practice” their numeracy skills in  a real life context. Along with their teachers, and assisted by some of the local traders, the pupils worked on assignments to help them with percentages, ratios and money problems.

“The group have been playing football or other games every day prior to SCL’s involvement which has provided a break from academic work. This had become a very popular activity as all these young people said they had avoided games and PE in school because bulling often happened in the changing rooms. They were very enthusiastic about improving their skills with professional soccer coaching which had the added benefit of a accreditation. Two boys in particular are very happy that the extra activity has helped them to improve fitness and lose weight. Overweight young people are often bullied at school and these boys would avoid PE and games because they had to shower”.

The course has proved to be a great success. All the pupils have achieved a pass. It has been a popular course, even pupils who officially left the school at the end of the summer term have returned to complete their work. The course tutor related very easily to the pupils, never raising his voice rather using humour and example to install a sense of discipline in the group. A number of other, younger pupils were also incorporated into a number of activities. This allowed a greater amount of practical coaching to take place. Once again the needs of these pupils were fully catered for and they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

We would like to run the course again next year as we felt it has been of significant benefit to our pupils both in terms of confidence and skills.

David Morrissey
Coordinator Leavers’ programme

“The identified pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the course provided for them by SCL, and the majority have begun to respond in a consistently more mature manor in other lessons. The focus on practical activity has enabled students to improve their own performance in football, and at the same time they have been focussing on developing their basic skills in perceived non-threatening environment to good effect. The planning, preparation, and delivery of each session is superb and the SCL course leader has quickly established excellent relationships with the pupils.”
